Overview of Murray Street Vineyards

Established: 2001
Winemaker: Craig Viney
Annual Cases: 20000
Region: Barossa Valley

MURRAY STREET VINEYARDS is Barossa through and through. All MSV wine is made in the beautiful Barossa region, from their two estate vineyards – Greenock and Gomersal – and from a very small band of family growers in Eden Valley and Barossa Valley.

Overlooking the Greenock Estate Vineyard is their winery, a facility that enables the winemaking team to use old world techniques and work with small vineyard parcels to create wines that speak of the locale and the variety, with hallmark generosity of flavour.

Their wines are critically acclaimed in Australia, with James Halliday giving the winery his coveted 5-star rating. Internationally, Murray Street swept the field at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards in London and was declared ‘most successful Australian exhibitor’.

Murray Street fosters the philosophy that wine begins in the vineyard and they manage their two estate vineyards in a sustainable way, mindful of their environmental responsibility. They have planted literally thousands of trees on both sites and support local revegetation in a hands-on manner, growing native seedling and using them to regenerate creek lines and remnant native vegetation. Within the vineyard the sustainable management strategies continue with under vine mulching and minimal use of pesticides and herbicides. The vine rows receive minimal intervention with natural grasses encouraged rather than cultivation and cover crops. Water usage is carefully monitored with the Greenock vineyard being completely dry grown apart from the Estate Semillon.

The People

In 2002, Andrew & Vanessa Seppelt met kindred spirits Bill & Pattie Jahnke. Their shared passion for wine, especially Barossa wine, for flavour, integrity and heritage lead to the founding of Murray Street Vineyards with the imperative to produce wine that honours the past and helps define the future of winemaking in the Barossa.

Andrew and Vanessa work together at Murray Street – Andrew as winemaker and Vanessa in public relations, graphic design and whatever else is needed. At vintage time, that may be grape picking or crushing or creating fabulous meals to nourish the hungry team.

The Winemaker

Andrew is a descendent of Joseph Seppelt, who left Europe to settle in the Barossa in the 1849. In 1868, his son Benno, with his wife Sophia, built Seppeltsfield winery and village, passing that great Australian winemaking legacy to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He recalls fond moments of his childhood, wandering in the winery, with the sights, smells and sounds of vintage embedded in his memory. The Seppelt family may no longer own or operate Seppeltsfield but those recollections drew Andrew to winemaking and continue to inspire him. As a sixth generation Barossa winemaker, he can truly say that ‘wine is in his blood.’

The Tasting Room

The MSV Tasting Room is an intimate and stylish cellar door located at the Greenock Estate Vineyard, providing sweeping vistas of vines and sky through all the seasons.

Tasting at Murray Street is personal and informative – with no bars separating guests from the experience. Instead, seating is on the beautiful veranda or indoors on comfortable lounges. Regional food platters are there to enjoy as is some of the best coffee in the Barossa.

The MSV tasting room was named ‘Best Cellar Door in the Barossa in 2010’ by the region’s cellar door group and ‘One of the Top Five Cellar Doors in South Australia’ in the same year.

Open 7 days : 10.00 – 6.00pm : Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day :
