Region: Gundagai
You will find “Borambola Homestead” on the Sturt Highway, 25 kilometres east of Wagga Wagga in the Gundagai growing region of NSW. A majestic and gracious home dating back to the 1880s, Borambola has a colourful history. It was built by George Macleay, son of Alexander Macleay, the then Colonial Secretary who built Elizabeth Bay House in Sydney. It was host to King Edward VIII when, as Prince of Wales, he visited Australia in 1920. Borambola reached its high point in the 1880s when it was the centre of a pastoral empire of about 1.4 million acres, owned by John Donnelly. Borambola then passed through several hands and was finally purchased by F.W. Hughes, a famous figure on the Australian f inancial scene. He used the property to breed horses, including Hiraji, the 1947 Melbourne Cup Winner. In 1992 Borambola became the McMullen family home. The Borambola Name Borambola is an Aboriginal name derived from the Bora Ceremony at which young men were initiated as a prelude to recognition as full-grown men. The Bora Ring is the sacred ground where the initiation rites are observed. Gundagai Region Gundagai Wine Growing Region, with over 30 vineyards, is one of the newest designated wine growing regions in NSW. The Gundagai region has rolling Snowy Mountain foothills in one direction and the rich plains of the Murrumbidgee River in the other. Located approximately 400km south west of Sydney on the slopes of the Great Dividing Ranges, the Gundagai Geographical Indication (GI) begins at 200 meters (656 ft) with vineyards planted as high as 300meters (984 ft). The region is described as warm to cool climate. The rainfall is winter-spring dominant. The three driest months are the ripening period of February, March and April. Gundagai fruit combines the intensity of fruit flavours from the Hilltops region to its north with the perfume of the Canberra region to its East. Borambola Vineyard Borambola Vineyard was established in 1995, when we planted the first Chardonnay grapes in the grey sandy loan soil on the western side of the homestead, at an elevation of 250 metres. Encouraged by the success of our first vintage of Chardonnay, we moved on to stage two: Borambola red wines. It seemed like exponential growth, but in 1997 we expanded the vineyard to the equally verdant eastern and northern paddocks and planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
